The area around the main plaza has many sites of interest. | | Days 2-4 | Puno/Lake Titicaca | Water stretches as far as the eye can see at Lake Titicaca, home to many communities with unique cultures. Be welcomed by locals on an island homestay experience, travel by boat on the calm waters and maybe pick up some quality knitted goods handmade by the local men on Taquile Island. | | Day 5 | Cuzco | Take time to acclimatise to the city's 3,400 m altitude by taking a slow stroll around the many Inca-built walls that line Cuzco's central streets. Then perhaps visit the stone fortress of Sacsayhuaman, which looks out over the city from a hilltop position - Cuzco is a fascinating city brimming with history and tradition. | | Day 6 | Sacred Valley | Travel through the Sacred Valley and visit Pisac, known for its colourful artisan market, and Ollantaytambo, a geometrically perfect town. Keep an eye out for the maize crops covering the terraces that are carved high into the valley walls. | | Days 7-10 | Inca Trail | Get up close to the Peruvian wilderness on this challenging hike along the Inca Trail. Enjoy trekking, camping out and stopping to take in the panoramic vistas of snow-capped mountain peaks along the way. Amazing Machu Picchu is the final destination. There's plenty of time here to wander around the many buildings and a chance to marvel at the breathtaking ruins. | | Day 11 | Cuzco | Back in Cuzco, enjoy free time to rest or do some more exploring of the Urubamba River. For those hankering for more information about the Incas, head to the Museo Inka to spend the afternoon in this fascinating museum. | | Days 12-13 | Amazon Jungle | Head out into the glistening jungle with our local guides. Spot macaws, monkeys, peccary, otters and thousands of butterflies in the thick virgin jungle of the Amazon. A simple, but comfortable, eco-lodge is home for the night. | | Days 14-15 | Lima | A canoe trip back to civilisation, then it's onto Lima for some more sightseeing opportunities. Visit the many fine museums, descend into the creepy catacombs, view the changing of the guard at the Palacio de Gobierno or head to the cosmopolitan coastal districts to try some tasty seafood. |
