Itinerary
DayDestinationDescription
Day 1BuonconventoSituated on the confluence of the Arbia and Ombrone rivers, this prosperous trading town boasts beautiful houses, a fine town hall and the Sacred Art Museum, filled with Renaissance masterpieces. Wander the streets within the ramparts, or walk the surrounding hills to warm up.
Day 2Buonconvento to MontalcinoThe vineyards of Brunello produce some of the most expensive wines in the world. You can stop for some wine-tasting on your way to Montalcino, or head straight for the friendly town for a glass of the country's best - Brunello di Montalcino. Otherwise, explore its hilltop fortress or the 14th century castle and enjoy commanding views of the countryside before turning in for the night.
Day 3Montalcino to Bagno VignoniFounded around the 12th century, the vast alabaster interior of the church of Sant'Antimo reverberates with the sound of Gregorian chants sung by its Benedictine monks. Savour a moment of peace before continuing on to the village of Bagno Vignoni, renowned for its thermal springs. This evening, you can soak your aches away just like the Romans did thousands of years ago.
Days 4-5Bagno Vignoni to PienzaA model town of the Renaissance, Pienza is a World Heritage-listed site and the birthplace of Pope Pius II. Visit the Cattedrale dell'Assunta to peruse luminous panel paintings created by the most talented Sienese artists in the Renaissance period. Otherwise, venture into the elegant Palazzo Piccolomini, its graceful loggia offering a fabulous panorama over the verdant Valley of Orcia.
