Camp on the edge of this world-renowned reserve and take game drives through its rolling grasslands. Be sure to keep the camera poised, ready to photograph the many leopards, rhinos and giraffes that live here. Over the border in Tanzania, stop in the eclectic town of Arusha, a melting pot of markets, tribesmen and modern life, at the foot of looming Mt Meru. Pop into Meserani Snake Park and, out on the plains, meet friendly locals on a walk through a Masai village. Then there's incredible 4WD adventures through the Serengeti National Park, Olduvai Gorge and Ngorongoro Crater for abundant wildlife-viewing opportunities. | | Days 9-14 | Tanzania/Zanzibar | Drive past snow-capped Mt Kilimanjaro en route to the coastal city of Dar es Salaam. Set up tents on a balmy beach just outside the city and take the time to shop for wood carvings before catching a ferry to the tropical paradise of Zanzibar. Wander through the winding streets of Stone Town, savouring the smell of spices and discovering streets filled with bazaars, mosques and palaces. There is also time to relax on Zanzibar's beautiful beaches. On return to the mainland, drive through Mikumi National Park, home to shy forest elephants and gawky giraffes. | | Days 15-24 | Malawi/Zambia | Continue on to Malawi, the warm heart of Africa. One fifth of this country is covered by Lake Malawi and travelling along its shore you can watch fishermen ply their trade. Optional activities here such as scuba diving, snorkelling and sailing are available at peaceful Kande Beach. Leaving the lake, head to Livingstone and the thunderous Victoria Falls, an awesome sight by any measure. Camping on the banks of the Zambezi, there are plenty of adrenaline-pumping optional activities, such as bungee jumping, abseiling or white-water rafting. | | Days 25-31 | Botswana/South Africa/Johannesburg | Board a ferry to Botswana and drive to Chobe National Park. There's more wildlife to be spotted in this park including leopards, lions and majestic fish eagles, which you may see from a special bird-watching cruise.
