There is time to experience village life, meet Masai tribespeople and have a cold beer in the famed Snake Pit of Meserani. The Serengeti, with its expansive horizons, is another excellent place to spot the Big Five, as is the animal-packed Ngorongoro Crater. Call in at Olduvai Gorge to learn about the Cradle of Mankind. | | Days 8-15 | Tanzania/Zanzibar | The road travels past the snow-dusted summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. Dar es Salaam is the launch pad for the Spice Island of Zanzibar. With its idyllic, palm-fringed beaches, turquoise waters and a charming town packed with Arabic, Oriental and Indian-inspired architecture, this island is a delight. Continue on to spot giraffes in the Mikumi National Park en route to Malawi. | | Days 16-25 | Malawi/Zambia | The sandy shores of Lake Malawi await. With more fish species than any lake on earth, why not dive in and explore this unique freshwater paradise? Wake early to take in the peaceful sight of fishermen out on the lake in their traditional dugout canoes, waiting for their catch of the day. Cross into Zambia and set up camp on the banks of the Zambezi, a haven for hippos and the occasional bull shark. Canoe alongside these creatures for a closer look or visit nearby Victoria Falls, the crashing waters spray up watery clouds of mist. | | Days 26-31 | Botswana | Overland and boat safaris in Chobe National Park are a chance to see some of the reserve's many elephants and eagles. Glide across the lagoons, lakes and hidden channels of the Okavango Delta to view the abundant birdlife and crocodiles hidden among giant lily pads. Camp out on a remote river island and fall asleep to the nocturnal sounds of Africa. Take a walk with Ghanzi bushmen, who speak in their own language of clicks - an amazing tribal experience. | | Days 32-41 | Namibia | The floodlit waterholes of Etosha National Park make it easy to watch wildlife at night. Then continue on to eerie Damaraland to inspect ancient bushman paintings. A short stop at the Cape Cross seal colony is a chance to watch thousands of seals caper along the coastline. At the old German town of Swakopmund, quench a need for speed, perhaps sliding down sand dunes on a surfboard. | | Days 42-43 | South Africa/Cape Town | Clamber over towering sand dunes in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Follow nature walks among the stunning dunes and saltpans. Admire the amazing panoramas of Fish River Canyon, one of the world's largest canyon's, and relax on the scenic banks of the Orange River. Travel to the picturesque city of South Africa's Cape Town to take an interesting and insightful township tour. |
