The provinces of China were first set up during the Yuan Dynasty. There were initially 10 provinces. By the time the Qing Dynasty was established, there were 18, all of which were in China proper. The People's Republic of China in the 1950's created administrative control over twenty-two provinces and considers Taiwan to be its twenty-third province.
There are five autonomous regions ,and four municipalities which collectively are referred to as "mainland China", and two Special Administrative Regions (that enjoy considerable autonomy.

Government imposes new visa restrictions

China is continuing to tighten its visa policy in advance of the Beijing Olympic games, as new curbs on tourists and business travelers were introduced last week. Travel professionals say it's now necessary to submit copies of tickets both into and out of the country, as well as a hotel voucher, in order to get a visa application accepted. In addition, visitors from Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand no longer are allowed to apply for a visa at an embassy in Hong Kong, but must do so at a Chinese Embassy in their home countries. Multiple-entry visas were discontinued several weeks ago.
