 This classic Italian vacation is our most popular, with departures throughout the year. Two-night stays in Rome, Florence, Lake Maggiore**, Venice, and Sorrento, plus one night in St. Francis' Assisi offer plenty of time to visit the main sights with a Local Guide. Discover St. Peter's, the Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, Michelangelo's David, St. Mark's, Doges' Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Also stop to see Pisa's Leaning Tower, in vibrant Milan, in Switzerland's subtopical Lugano, in Romeo & Juliet's Verona, and in Ravenna to visit the Basilica of St. Apollinaris of Classe. From Sorrento, visit Pompeii at the foot of Mount Vesuvius and the Isle of Capri, including a jetfoil ride and a funicular ride to Capri village. Orientation features its gothic DUOMO, glass-domed GALLERIA, and famed La Scala Opera House. Then, continue to Lugano in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. A leisurely break to stroll along the lake, window-shop the refined Via Nassa, or sip an espresso on the Piazza Riforma. Next, a scenic drive along Lake Maggiore, one of Italy's most beautiful areas. Spend two nights at your elegant resort. (B,D) | | Day 7 | Lake Maggiore | A restful day to sleep in or maybe join an optional excursion to the baroque palace and peacock gardens of enchanting Isola Bella (open Mar. 26-Oct. 23, subject to change). (B,D) | | Day 8 | Venice | East to Verona, medieval setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, to see Juliet's Balcony and the well-preserved Arena. CLARE'S CHURCH and ST. FRANCIS' BASILICA with a local guide. Time to take in this peaceful town on your own. (B,D) | | Day 11 | Sorrento | Today, visit POMPEII, the Roman city both destroyed and preserved by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Overnight in the charming, bayside resort of Sorrento. (B) | | Day 12 | Sorrento | Speed across the bay by JETFOIL to the Isle of Capri. Ride the FUNICULAR to Capri village for a guided visit of this pretty town. Free time to explore the little shops on the Piazzetta before returning to Sorrento. The remainder of the day is at leisure. (B) | | Day 13 | Rome | A short drive back to Rome. Tonight, consider saying arrivederci to your traveling companions at an optional festive dinner in one of Rome's fine restaurants. Air booked in conjunction with a land vacation is considered an air-inclusive vacation. Air can only be booked by Globus in conjunction with a land package and is only available for passengers traveling from the United States. For vacation departures in 2010, your final air-inclusive vacation price is guaranteed when your air schedule had been confirmed and your entire vacation package has been paid in full. For vacation departures in 2010, an additional $250 non-refundable deposit (total $500 non-refundable) is required for air booked in conjunction with any land vacation and your final air-inclusive vacation price is guaranteed when your flight information is confirmed and Globus has received your full land and air deposit.
