Visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial, a tribute to Ghana's first president. Walk through Independence Square, Accra's open air ceremonial grounds.

    Day 3AccraContinue your city tour of Accra, Ghana's capital city and the seat of government. After lunch, you will observe the construction of the fascinating "Fantasy Coffins" of Teshie Nungua at the local casket making shop as they are carved in the shapes of different objects depicting traditional beliefs in life after death. These coffins have been featured in National Geographic and can be found in museums and galleries worldwide. Later, visit the Artists Alliance Gallery and the Loom Art Gallery, where authentic artworks by renowned Ghanian artists are on display.

    Day 5Cape CoastToday drive to Cape Coast for a New Year treat. Edina Bronya, or Elmina Christmas, is a festival that has been held for centuries in Elmina dating back to the Dutch occupation during the colonial period. This festival takes place on the first Thursday of January. Drumming, dancing and masquerading are all a part of this grand celebration that commemorates the lives of their ancestors. This carnival atmosphere is a great way to start the New Year.

    Day 6ElminaDrive to the central region to tour the infamous forts, castles and slave dungeons. Visit the Cape Coast castle which was built in 1653. This castle also houses the West African Historicl Museum established by the Smithsonian Institute in 1994. After lunch, tour the Elmina Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1482. This castle was the first European structure in sub-Saharan Africa. Observe the preparations for overnight fishing as the colorful fishing canoes, pirogues, are made ready to go out to sea, offering one of West Africa's best picture perfect opportunities.

    Day 7POSUBANEarly morning drive through the historic Denkyira Kingdom to Kakum National Park, one of West Africa's surviving tropical rain forests. Extending over 360sq km, Kakum is the home to over 40 large mammals and 400 bird species as well as many species of butterflies, flora and fauna. The most popular attraction is the Canopy walkway, which is made up of seven bridges extending 330m, hanging 30m (100 feet) above the forest floor. Choose between a 2 km nature walk through this forest to discover the wide variety of exotic floral species and the medicinal values they offer, or take a walk on the canopy walkway. After lunch, visit the Posuban Military Shrine where Fanti traditional soldiers engaged in spiritual preparation for battle.

    Day 8KumasiAfter breakfast depart to Kumasi, the realm of the ancient Ashanti Kingdom of Gold. En route visit the "Slave River" at Assin Manso where captured Africans had their last bath before being confined in the Slave Dungeons to await shipment to the Americas. If time permits, visit the home of Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the legendary female general who led Ashanti Armies against British Forces in 1900.

    Day 9KumasiIn the morning, bargain at Kumasi Central Market. (also known as Kejetia Market), the largest open-air market in West Africa where more than 10,000 vendors sell just about everything imaginable.

    Continue your tour with a visits to the Ashanti craft villages. First, learn about woodcarving in the village of Ahwiaa, known for the talented craftsmen who fashion royal stools, walking sticks and fertility dolls from wood. Your next stop is the village of Ntonso, where artisans hand-stamp patterns on cotton cloth to make Adinkra textiles. Black-on-black and black-on-red Adinkra cloth are worn for funerals and other solemn occasions. Discover how the black dye is made from the bark of trees, and create your own Adinkra sash to take home. Later, visit Bonwire, where the famous Kente cloth is handmade on looms in a time-honored tradition passed down through generations. Observe the Kente weavers creating the traditional kente cloth. If time permits, visit the Manhiyia Palace and museum where discover more about the history of the Ashanti people.

    Day 10AccraAfter breakfast depart to Accra stopping at points of interest including Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, the first commercial cocoa farm in Ghana. Touch the actual cocoa pods of Ghana's largest export, which is used to blend some of the world's finest chocolates. Continue to Aburi Botanical Gardens and learn about the cultural and medicinal importance of the trees in these gardens. Continue to Accra arriving early evening with the evening at your leisure.
