Meru Village Visit | After a breakfast safari briefing, we depart for an out-of-the-way rural village on the slopes of Mt. Meru. You will be welcomed by the villagers. Once subsistence farmers, many Tanzanians now have small industries that afford them a better lifestyle. We'll meet some early pioneers of this trend and experience their warmth and enthusiasm. There are no clamoring crowds, no noisy tour groups, just the vibrant tranquility of the Tanzanian countryside and the gracious hospitality of our hosts. Meal(s) Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | | Day 3 | Tarangire National Park | This morning we drive south across the Maasai Steppe to Tanzania's fourth largest park and one of it's most scenic. Giant baobab trees and umbrella acacias dot the rocky hills and verdant valleys. Wildlife is drawn to the Tarangire River, a year-round source of water for huge herds of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes of all shapes and sizes, gazelles, and the predators - lions, leopards and hyenas. Tarangire is also well known for its many bird species including impressive raptors. As we enjoy these remarkable surroundings, your attentive Camp staff will prepare for your arrival by setting up your home for the next two days. You will be welcomed to this secluded, comfortable camp with a delicious lunch prepared by first rate chefs, after lunch , relax before the afternoon wildlife viewing. Later this evening, savor the seclusion and rustic beauty of your first night deep in the heart of Africa. Meal(s) Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | | Day 5 | Ngorongoro Highlands | Spend the morning wildlife viewing in Tarangire, searching the trees for leopards, pausing as elephant families cross the road, Hornbills cry out from overhead and curious baboons scamper to a better vantage point. After lunch in the camp, we depart for the Ngorongoro Highlands to an old coffee estate ,Gibbs Farm, which is a favorite stop. Explore the farm and forest on foot (optional) and enjoy delicious meals produced from farm fresh foods. The air is cooler here and the vegetation is lush with colorful flowers. Meal(s) Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | | Day 6 | Serengeti National Park | After breakfast depart for the vast plains of the Serengeti, home to the annual wildebeest migration and to some of the largest prides of lions in East Africa. Cheetahs, elephants, zebras, hippos, buffaloes, giraffes, hyenas, and antelope like topi, eland, dik dik and impala roam freely - the way they have for thousands of years. With a picnic lunch en route, we have plenty of time for viewing wildlife before arriving at our Camp. Refresh with a hot shower and a cold drink. Relish this complete immersion into the landscape, enjoy the rustic luxury of your camp and savor the opportunity to relax far away from the crowds. Later, enjoy a delicious meal served in the spacious dining tent, and retire afterward to the campfire to share stories, or simply listen to the sounds of the African night. Take time to visit the small but informative Olduvai Gorge museum before continuing to higher elevations, finally attaining the rim of the world's largest unbroken caldera, commonly referred to as "Africa's Garden of Eden". Only 10 miles across, the Crater is home to nearly every major African mammal imaginable - huge bull elephants, black rhinos, herds of buffalo, wildebeest , gazelle, hippos, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, warthogs, zebras, baboons, monkeys... and others. With mini-ecosystems ranging from acacia forests to savanna to soda lakes, Ngorongoro Crater is a year-round haven for wildlife, and the viewing is always spectacular. Here the animals have little to fear from humans, so close-up viewing is quite common. In addition to game drives on the crater floor, we have the opportunity to visit with our Maasai friends and learn about their fascinating pastoral lifestyle and colorful traditions.
