Argentina and Chile are the most "European" countries in South America. During the mid-1800s, European immigration was promoted, bringing with it education, culture and agricultural know-how. These two countries are also home to some of the most stunning mountain scenery to be found in the Andes, and the region of Patagonia is perhaps the most spectacular of all. Southwest from Buenos Aires we come to Bariloche, gateway to the beautiful lake districts of Argentina and Chile. Beautifully situated on the shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake, the town is the starting point of our lake crossing, past impressive volcanic peaks, down to Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales in southern Chile. The National Parks of the south boast glaciers and wildlife to rival the great icy continent of Antarctica. Here the striking granite spires of the "Towers of Paine" jut eternally skyward whilst the massive Moreno Glacier advances slowly towards Lago Argentino. Further south, at the very end of the world, we come to the town of Ushuaia on the shores of the Beagle Channel. Here, rookeries are home to sub-Antarctic wildlife and icebreakers set sail on the journey to Antarctica.
