Exploration of the flat-topped Mt Roraima and the Grand Savannah, inspiration for Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World'
The south of Venezuela is dominated by one of the most extraordinary landscapes in the world. The Tepuys are immense table mountains with bare cliffs of red sandstone which tower nearly 3000m above the surrounding grassland and dense jungle, harbouring unique ecosystems with many unusual plant species. Our classic six-day trek tackles the highest and most famous of these, Mt Roraima. We will also see the largest Tepuy (Auyan), and get close up to the world's highest waterfall, Angel Falls.
Itinerary:
Day 1 Start Caracas. 2 Early flight to Puerto Ordaz, drive towards the Grand Savannah. 3 Arrive in the small village of San Francisco de Yuruani. 4 Start of the Roraima trek; hike to Rio Tek. 5 Hike to the base camp. 6 Ascend Roraima Tepui. 7 Trek to the summit. 8 Descent to Rio Tek. 9 Hike to Parai Tepui and drive to Santa Elena. 10 Small plane to Canaima, boat transfer to Anatoly Island, overnight in hammocks; afternoon walking excursion to Salto Sapo. 11-12 Wet season (Jun-Dec): take a boat along the Rio Carrao and Rio Churun to Isla de Raton; hike for 45 minutes through tropical rainforest to Angel Falls; overnight in hammocks. Dry season (Jan-May): excursion to Orquid Island. 13 Return to Canaima; fly to Ciudad Bolivar (optional flight over Angel Falls); afternoon exploring the colonial city centre. 14 Fly back to Caracas; end Caracas
Mode of travel: Travel by internal flight and private minibus. 6 days light back-packing (extra porters can be hired locally if required). Altitude maximum 2810m, average 1500m.
Group size: Min. 6, max. 16, plus leader and local guides.
Accommodation: 5 nights camping, 1 night hammock, 5 nights guesthouses, 2 nights hotels (1 basic).
