Day 2GuadalajaraGuadalajara : Depart after our leisurely breakfast at the hotel for a city tour, including Plaza Tapatia with its beautiful Cathedral, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral. We will visit Cabanas Orphanage (now a museum) to see the beautiful murals of Jose Clemente Orozco. A stop will be made at The Libertad Market before continuing to Tlaquepaque with its myriad of unique shops and restaurants. We have lunch at a local restaurant before returning back to the hotel. (B,L)
Day 3GuadalajaraGuadalajara : This morning depart for an exciting day visit to nearby Tequila. Enjoy a guided tour of the tequila fields, followed by a visit to see the elaboration of the product and ample time for "sampling." A typical Mexican buffet lunch with a variety of different fruit flavored "margaritas" is included at a family hacienda complete with live mariachi music for which the state of Jalisco is known, during lunch. (B,L)
Day 4PatzcuaroPatzcuaro : Depart after breakfast for the city of Morelia, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 16th century, it is an outstanding example of urban planning which combines the ideas of the Spanish Renaissance with the Mesoamerican experience. Well adapted to the slopes of the hill site, its streets still follow the original layout with more than 200 historic buildings, all in the region's characteristic pink stone. The total effect reflects the town's architectural history, revealing a masterly and eclectic blend of the medieval spirit with Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical elements. We will visit the beautiful Morelia Cathedral. Morelia was the birthplace of several important personalities of independent Mexico and has played a major role in the country's history. We will have lunch at a local restaurant. In the late afternoon, a short bus ride will bring us to the quaint colonial town of Patzcuaro in time for dinner on our own. (B,L)
Day 5PatzcuaroPatzcuaro : In Patzcuaro we can easily walk practically anywhere and in fact taking a tour on foot is the best way to really appreciate the lovely old buildings along the narrow streets, the arches and commanding facades around the two town squares, Plaza Don Vasco de Quiroga and Plaza Gertrudis Bocanegra, the market and the many small crafts shops accessed through small doorways in thick stone and plastered walls. The Pátzcuaro area is well known for its rustic, carved wooden furniture and its colorful woven textiles, among many other crafts. After lunch, we will take a boat ride across Lake Patzcuaro to the Island of Janitzio. We will continue with a trip to nearby Sta. Clara del Cobre to see the "copper" centre of Mexico. We will have an exclusive demonstration for our group of the processing procedure of cooper. Back in Patzcuaro, dinner on our own to enjoy the evening at your leisure and experience the local folklore. (B,L)
Day 6GuanajuatoGuanajuato : Departure this morning for historically significant and charming Guanajuato. The town is a maze of cobblestone streets and alleys that wind around steep hillsides upon a small ravine, which opens into vistas of beautiful churches and small plazas. Once a major mining center, its mines poured out silver for the Spanish crown. In 1988, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guanajuato has no traffic lights or neon signs, creating an extremely enjoyable place to walk. Our afternoon sightseeing includes the unique underground streets, the historic Alhondiga de Granaditas, University of Guanajuato, Juarez Theatre, Valenciana silver mine. Our special "Farewell Dinner" will be held at a sidewalk cafe overlooking Jardin Union, We may be able to witness the passing of a local "estudiantina," Guanajuato's wandering minstrel groups decked out in traditional renaissance costumes playing their old world instruments as they stroll through the city. (B,D)
Day 7New YorkNew York, NY : Transfer to the airport for our flight home. We arrive home the same day with memories of our neighboring country Mexico. (B)
