Surrounded by cactus desert, jagged mountains, and the Sea of Cortez, Loreto has an easy-going desert-by-the-sea ambiance that appeals to people who want to bask in nature. The sleepy village is dotted by vineyards and olive groves. Fishing boats and windsurfers create a splash of color on the sea, and there are many outdoor activities in the area. The golden hills of the Sierra Gigante watch over this tranquil town, and the meandering pier shaded by palm trees is a favorite spot.
Down the coast 220 miles is the bigger city of La Paz, a great eco-tourism destination with deserted beaches and ecologically perfect off-shore islands. La Paz also offers shopping, dining and nightlife along Colonial streets that take visitors back to "Old Baja." A fantastic waterfront is a departure point for deep-sea expeditions, diving, andwater-skiing.
