Cappadocia - Subterranean Cities
After a look at the great sites of Istanbul we travel to Ankara - the modern but equally compelling capital of Turkey. Crossing the Anatolian Plateau to the surreal, volcanic landscape of Cappadocia, we'll spend time exploring the underground city of Kaymakli, dating back to the time of the mysterious Hittites, and visit ancient Goreme, where the "fairy chimneys" and rock-cut houses still provide homes to the Cappadocian people. In Konya, home of the Whirling Dervishes, we visit the Mevlana Museum, before continuing to the attractive lakeside town of Egirdir.

The Lycian Coast
We spend two days soaking up the atmosphere and spectacular scenery of the Lycian coastline. Set against a wild mountain backdrop of dense green forest, this is perhaps the most beautiful part of all Turkey.

Pamukkale, Ephesus, Troy and Gallipoli
Heading north, we visit the marble ruins of Aphrodisias, and stop to see the white travertines of Pamukkale cascading down the hillside. In the magnificent and sprawling Greco-Roman seaport of Ephesus we discover one of the best preserved ancient sites to be found anywhere. Finally we explore the lofty acropolis of Pergamum and the ruins of ancient Troy before crossing the Dardanelles to the battlefields of Gallipoli and returning to Istanbul for our last night.

Itinerary:

Day 1 Join Istanbul. 2 In Istanbul, walking tour. 3 Drive to Ankara. 4 Visit Museum of Anatolian Civilisations and drive to Urgup. 5 In Urgup; visit Uchisar, Goreme Valley and Kaymakli underground city. 6 Drive to Egirdir via Konya. 7 Visit Olympos en-route to Kas. 8 In Kas (optional boat trip or sea-kayaking). 9 Drive to Dalyan; sail by riverboat through the reed beds to Caunus. 10 To Pamukkale via Hierapolis. 11 Drive to Selcuk. 12 In Selcuk; visit Greco-Roman site of Ephesus. 13 Visit Pergamum & Troy en-route to Canakkale 14 Ferry across Dardanelles to Gallipoli; drive to Istanbul 15 Tour ends Istanbul.

Accommodation: 14nts hotel - staying in standard accommodation throughout; 14 breakfasts included.
Transport: Bus/Riverboat/Ferry.
Comment: A comprehensive journey taking in all the highlights of Western and Central Turkey, plus some time to relax on the beautiful south west coast. Be prepared for some long drives.
