Larapinta Trail

The Larapinta Trail traverses the West MacDonnell Ranges, and is considered to be one of Australia's finest and most unique walks. Rugged rocky outcrops form a striking backdrop to scenic trails that cut a swathe through the awe-inspiring gorges and expansive plains. We camp at night amongst sentinel gum trees under a canopy of stars, absorbing the ambience of the stark Australian outback. We have chosen our walks along the best sections of the trail. One highlight is the challenging, yet immensely rewarding, climb to the top of Mount Sonder (1380m), where we enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, plains, valleys and salt lakes.

Outback camping Peregrine styleAs this is the outback there is no ready access to power, water or essential services. The camp sites are chosen for the experience on offer, locality to the walking trails and the sheer beauty, peace and quiet they engender. You will be sleeping in traditional Aussie Swags comprising mattress, sheets, pillow, duna (duvet), blankets and of course, a sleeping bag, all of which are provided. Tents are available (single or double configuration) although you will be required to assist with putting it up and dismantling. Portable lighting (head lights or similar) are highly recommended. Portable toilets and change facilities are erected at each camp site. This is a genuine camping experience so is rustic in nature. However, there is nothing like a roaring wood fire, sensational meals and the best multi star accommodation possible to more than compensate for any lack of home comforts. WeatherIn winter months (May- September) daytime temperatures are pleasant, usually around 25-30A°C, however in May and September this can sometimes get into the 30's. Night time is much colder, usually below 10A°C, In June and July night can get very cold, often below zero What you need to bringAs we are camping you will need to be prepared for this. You'll need to bring a flashlight (torch), hat (wide brimmed best), sunscreen, insect repellent, any required medication, water bottle (at least 3-4 litres), walking shoes/boots, warm clothing (winter), your own sleeping bag if you prefer (sleeping bags are provided), toiletries, swim wear, towel, camera, extra film or batteries and a great sense of humour; Travel Voucher/Ticket. WaterAmple quality drinking water will be available for the duration of your trek as there is no running water in the MacDonnell Ranges. Limited water for washing, etc, will be made available at the conclusion of each day. ShowersOpportunity will exist on two days of your trek to have a shower at either Ormiston or Glen Helen. These facilities could cost up to $5/person. During the walks or at our camp sites there may be water holes which you can swim and bathe in although the water will be cold. We discourage the use of Shampoos or Soaps in any of the area's natural water holes so as to leave them in the state we find them. Towels are not provided on the tour. Please bring your own for bathing, swimming or showering. Driving and walking timesThis itinerary is intended as a guide only. All times stated are approximate. Local conditions and the weather, and individual and group fitness, may necessitate variations to the program and can affect the availability of views and panoramas described. Respecting Indigenous culturePlease note that itineraries that include visits to Indigenous sites may change at short notice, due to the cultural and ceremonial obligations of our Indigenous hosts and guides.
