If you are single and thinking about a cruise but worried about going alone, toss your fears overboard. A cruise is the ideal vacation for singles. I know, because I've cruised solo, and can't wait to do it again.
However, it might be easier for me, because I am naturally an outgoing kind of person and don't know a stranger. For others, getting out and mingling might present a problem. Just tell yourself (over and over, if need be) that you are on vacation and try to make up your mind to have a good time.
There are a lot of ways to meet people on a cruise, and here are a few tips that work for me:
As soon as you board the ship, find the maitre'd and ask if you can have dining room seating with other singles. Sometimes it isn't possible, but I've still made lots of friends with couples at my table.
There is usually a singles party the very first night, but make it a priority to meet the cruise director and inquire about other activities specifically for singles. If there are none, ask him/her to arrange special things like dance classes, card games, or even a private party. Offer to help organize and spread the word.
When out and about the ship, if you see someone sitting alone, ask if you can join them to chat. If it's a member of the opposite sex, don't worry about looking like a pickup. But should they react like they think you are--and you aren't--move on.
If dining on deck is available at lunch, make it a habit to take one of your meals there every day. Before going through the buffet line, look around and see who has a table to themselves. Ask if you can join them. If they say they're waiting for someone, you won't be standing there holding your tray and feeling rejected. But on a positive note, I've been turned away very few times, because most cruisers are in a friendly mode. Every once in a while you'll encounter a stinker, but don't take it personal.
Most ships offer dance classes. Go! You can be sure someone only went to please their partner and will be glad to sit one out and let you take the floor.
Be sure to take along a small address book you can tuck in your purse or pocket. When you meet someone you genuinely enjoy and want to stay in touch with, you won't have to fumble for paper and pen. Also carry your own cards. You can print them yourself with a simple and inexpensive software program for your PC.
Other ways to enjoy yourself: Attend any self-improvement classes offered, as well as makeover sessions. Be sure to check the schedule in the game room for anyone seeking a partner. Post a note yourself.
My own experiences cruising alone has also taught me some things to avoid. First on the list would be negative people. You might sit down next to a smiley face only to discover they want to vent about what a horrible cruise they are having.
Remember, some people aren't happy unless they are miserable...and they love company, so move on!
Is Cruising for Me?
So, you're thinking about taking a cruise for the first time, and as anyone should, you have questions. What is cruising really like? Is it right for me? Where should I go? What can I see?
WHO IS A TYPICAL CRUISER? A. I don't believe there is a "typical" cruiser. Cruisers are as wide and varied a lot as the ships that they sail on.
B. Some are young, some older, some are looking for non-stop fun and some want cultural enrichment.
C. pre-1976 (about the time the original "Love Boat" was on TV), cruises are not just for the elderly and wealthy. Back in the 1960's and 70's, when cruising was in its infancy, the majority of cruisers were more mature, had plenty of money and plenty of time.
D. But over the years, cruising has evolved into "everyman's holiday"
E. On a cruise ship today, you are likely to find passengers from all ages, income levels and backgrounds
F. According to CLIA the majority of cruisers today are under 60 years old and has an annual household income of $60,000 or less.
G. Cruise lines offering on board products and offerings to appeal to even younger and more active passengers
H. cruise lines are now recognizing the Gen-X'ers (25-35 years old) and the Gen-Tech'ers (15-25) as the two age groups that hold the most promising prospects as future cruise customers.
I. a good rule of thumb is that the longer the cruise, the older the average age will be.
IS CRUISING RIGHT FOR ME?
A. Well of course it is!! Cruises offer something for just about everyone.
B. Some people cruise just for the sheer joy of being at sea. It's a magical feeling of relaxation, elation and freedom from the stress of everyday life.
C. some cruise to experience the convenience of visiting up to six different ports of call in one week, all without having to worry about packing and unpacking, making hotel reservations or catching flights. The ship is your floating hotel and magically transports you from one exotic destination to the next.
Cruises offer value A. Cruises offer excellent value as they include your accommodations for the length of the cruise, meals and entertainment.
B. On board the latest generation of cruise ships you'll find multiple dining options ranging from formal sit-down restaurants, to pizza, a grill serving hot dogs and hamburgers, casual buffets and informal bistros.
C. entertainment options with lavish Broadway and Las Vegas style revues, live rock and country-western bands, cabaret, jazz, piano bars, discos and casinos.
D. workout regimen with the state of the art fitness facilities and spas, not to mention jogging tracks and swimming pools.
E. ships you will even find ice-skating rinks and rock climbing walls!!
F. Today's modern ships also follow and feature many of the popular trends found in world-class resorts and major cities such as Martini, Champagne and Caviar Bars, Cigar Clubs, cozy bistros, Coffee Bars and Internet Cafes.
G. on board activities can range from napkin folding and vegetable carving to sports competitions, lectures on the fine arts, politics and world famous authors.
H. Then there is the simple, yet hedonistic allure of simply relaxing in a deck chair with a view of the sea and being waited on hand and foot by your ship's onboard staff.
So, as you can see, life on board ship is not so different than vacationing at a large resort or in a large city. You can have and do it all or do nothing at all.
