Plymouth
The history of this genteel city is inextricably linked with the sea. The British Navy left Plymouth in 1588 to battle the Spanish Armada, and the port is still a major anchorage of the Royal Navy. Sir Walter Raleigh embarked here on a failed attempt to colonize Virginia, and only decades later, in 1610, the Pilgrims set sail from the Mayflower Steps.
