Digital Photo Worskshop Ghana, 14 Days

First tour the modern cosmopolitan capital city of Accra, where we will photograph historic and national landmarks as well as cultural hotspots. Next travel to the fishing village of Elmina to witness and photograph a traditional parade of chiefs and linguists. The group will then travel to Kumasi in the heart of the Ashanti kingdom. Kumasi will serve as our base and gateway city for escorted excursions (one or more days) to cultural sites and local events specifically to take photographs. Program participants can be at any level of camera proficiency. Academic credit can be arranged.

Next travel to the fishing village of Elmina, to photograph an historic slave fort and attend a fishing festival with a traditional parade of chiefs and linguists. The group will then travel to Kumasi in the heart of the Ashanti kingdom. Kumasi will serve as our base and gateway city for escorted excursions (one or more days) to cultural sites and local events specifically to take photographs.

    Evening arrival in Accra. Pass through customs at the airport.To the Paloma Hotel via shuttle bus. You will have the evening at leisure. Relax! Check your equipment and get ready for your 2-week adventure!

    Accra
    This morning we will take a city tour to visit and photograph Accra's historic landmarks. We will see Black Star Square, where ceremonies and parades are held during national holidays. We will pay a visit to the Nkrumah Memorial, the grave of Kwame Nkrumah, the first Ghanaian president. We will visit Dubois House, the Ghanaian home of W. E. B. Du Bois, the American-born civil rights leader who spent his last years in Accra. We will end the day photographing at the Accra Craft workshops, where you can buy very fine woodcarvings, drums, and several types of colorful cloth, including the Ashanti kente. You are expected to haggle for a good price so bargain hard! The tour group will get together that evening for a group dinner with a traditional dance show.

    Visit a fantasy coffin workshop to photograph the elaborate coffins as they are being made and chat with the workers. That afternoon relax at the popular Labadie Beach.

    Accra
    Free day to wander and photograph. What would you like to photograph? Let me offer you advice and directions. You may want to visit Osu, a popular meeting place for Western tourists. Situated on Cantoments Road, this area has internet cafes and restaurants of all kinds, even fast food like burgers, pizza, and ice cream.

    Elmina
    After breakfast, travel to Elmina, stopping to photograph in the Kankum National Forest. This forest park is a haven to exotic wildlife. A canopy walkway, above the forest floor, puts you in perfect range to photograph the exotic birds and other wildlife.

    Cape Coast
    Spend the day photographing the fishing village of Elmina. You can walk along the beach photographing the boats and fishermen as they return from sea with their catch of the day. We will see and photograph traditional ceremonies to bless the fishing fleet. You may even take a boat ride.

    This will be a free day to wander the village and photograph the fish market, seaside landscape, or people of Elmina.

    Elmina
    Very much like the tour Obama took at the Cape Coast Castle, you can take the tour and photograph at Elmira Castle, one of the primary slave holding forts in the western area. Here you can view the infamous "doorway of no return". Fishing boats line the shores and cannons point out to the sea.

    Kumasi
    After breakfast, we travel to Kumasi. Our driver knows our interests and is willing to stop for photo opportunities as we travel through the countryside

    Kumasi
    Meet and photograph a traditional Akan healer and diviner. Communication with the Akan Supreme Being is indirect. A diviner must interpret good luck or misfortune. Witness a ceremony of this indigenous practice firsthand and pour libations to the spirits. Later we will shop and photograph in the Kumasi Central Market, the largest traditional market in West Africa.

    Today we travel to the town of Bonwire to photograph the production of Kente cloth. Kente cloth of every description and price range is available. Open-air workshops make it easy to chat with the artisans and photograph the traditional looms. On the way we will stop at the village of Ntonso and watch Adinkra fabric being produced using traditional wax resist methods. Then we travel to Ahwaai, which is a production center for traditional and custom woodcarvings, all done in outdoor workshops.
