2018 : A Culinary Experience on the Danube Symphony (WVP-T1) - Artistry II
9 Day River Cruise from Vienna to Munich
Your European river cruise adventure begins in romantic and exciting Vienna, the capital of Austria, and ends with three nights in Munich, the Bavarian capital. Since this is a cruise with a "foodie" theme, there'll be culinary treats and tastings and an exclusive onboard food and wine-pairing dinner hosted by our Master of Wine.
Known as the "City of Music," Vienna inspired the creative genius of Beethoven, Mozart, and Strauss. Join your Local Guide for a traditional tour of the city, or participate in a culinary walk, ending with a cooking class! In your free time, stroll along the pedestrian walkway, Karntnerstrasse, or try a piece of Apfelstrudel in an elegant Viennese cafe. Cruise along the Danube River to Durnstein, in the heart of the Wachau Valley, famous for its baroque Stiftskirche; and later in Melk, visit Austria's majestic Benedictine Abbey. Savor local cheeses and wine in a tasting hosted by a Master of Wine and prepare your taste buds for a food and wine-pairing dinner with wines especially chosen for this occasion. Explore Passau, the "City of Three Rivers," with its narrow cobblestone streets lined with beautiful patrician houses or join a tour focusing on German and Austrian culinary traditions.
For a change of pace, travel by motorcoach to Munich, where a Local Guide shows you the famous attractions. Then explore on your own, and be sure to savor a local beer in a traditional stein, as you relax alongside the locals at a Biergarten. Step into a fairytale on an excursion that visits one of the most dreamlike castles in all of Europe-Neuschwanstein Castle-said to have inspired the tales of Walt Disney. And the magic of the day continues as you travel to Oberammergau, an idyllic village known for its once-a-decade performance of the Passion Play, as well as its typical Bavarian houses, many painted with scenes from fairytales. A befitting end to this marvelous European river cruise vacation!

Once the center of the mighty Habsburg Empire, Austria's magical capital on the blue Danube is a showcase of gilded architecture. This is home to the lavish Hofburg Imperial Palace complex with its Vienna Boys' Choir and dazzling Lipizzaner stallions; the neo-renaissance Vienna Opera House; and awe-inspiring St. Stephen's Cathedral-plus, countless other sights your Local Guide will show you during an included CITY SIGHTSEEING TOUR. Alternatively, you can join a Vienna culinary walk, during which you will learn about Austrian food culture and taste some local products. The walking tour will be followed by a cooking class at the "Wrenkh" restaurant, where two famous chefs, the Wrenkh brothers, will teach you how to prepare a famous Viennese dessert. In your free time, stroll through the delightful pedestrian Karntnerstrasse, and be sure to take a break and enjoy a piece of decadent Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel in one of the classic Viennese coffee houses, historic institutions that helped shape Viennese culture! An optional concert is available tonight. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Durnstein, known for the magnificent baroque Stiftskirche with its blue facade, lies right in the heart of the Wachau wine region. Above town are the ruins of the castle where England's King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192. A Local Guide will tell you the tale during your GUIDED WALK. Those seeking some sporting activity might like to climb up the steep hill to the castle ruins for spectacular views of the town and river. Alternatively, you may just want to stroll through the narrow streets on your own. A Master of Wine will join you on board and will introduce you to some of Austria's famous wines. Cruise through the beautiful Wachau Valley to reach Melk after lunch and visit the magnificent 11th-century BENEDICTINE ABBEY. Melk's abbey towers over the town and is one of Europe's largest. It houses an ornate library with over 80,000 printed books and 2,000 manuscripts. Words cannot describe the splendor of its church with its frescoed ceilings, stunning high altar, marble statues, and 210-foot-high cupola. This evening, you'll be able to sample some of the region's FAMOUS WINES paired with cheese during an on board TASTING presented by our Master of Wine. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
This morning, arrive in the attractive country resort of Grein, which is nestled at the foot of a bluff in the shadow of its castle. Take an included GUIDED WALK through the town and visit its unique historical THEATER, the oldest in Austria still holding regular performances. A behind-the-scenes peek to learn about some of the curiosities of this rococo-style, 167-seat theater will certainly tell you much about life as it was-and as it now is in this small town. Or, you may prefer to join one of a variety of optional excursions today. Sail to Linz where you dock overnight. This evening, enjoy a special o board FOOD AND WINE PAIRING DINNER hosted by our Master of Wine, who has specifically chosen the wines for this occasion. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Alternatively, you can join a city tour more focused on the culinary traditions of both Germany and Austria, during which you will taste some local specialties. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Booking your Vacation with Air
Our volume buying power saves you money. We may be able to provide you with flight arrangements from your gateway city. Avalon Waterways offers 2 air options: Flex Air and Instant Purchase Air. Early Airfare Price Guarantee locks in a price that is guaranteed not to increase. Air pricing and schedules are available approximately 330 days prior to last travel date in the itinerary. At that time the best air price will be utilized and a new invoice with the air cost and confirmed schedule will be sent. The identity of the carrier, which may include the carrier's codeshare partner, will be assigned and disclosed at this time. If the guaranteed price is the lowest, the schedule with the lowest fare per contracted classes of service will be booked. Any voluntary change to the confirmed flights negates the guaranteed price and is subject to air pricing at the time of the change.
Guaranteed air-inclusive prices - air is only available to passengers traveling from the United States and only available when booked in conjunction with a land vacation. An additional non-refundable air deposit of $300 per person is required for Flex Air booked in conjunction with any land vacation (i.e. air-inclusive vacation). Air can only be booked by Avalon in conjunction with a vacation package. Instant Purchase Air requires air payment in full at time of booking (i.e. air-inclusive vacation) plus a non-refundable per person service fee of $30 (North/Central America), $50 (Europe/Middle East) or $80 (all other international destinations). Once booked, Instant Purchase Air is non-refundable, and non-changeable. Some vacations may only offer one Air type option. However, once your airfare is confirmed and Avalon has received your full air and land deposit, your air-inclusive vacation price is guaranteed.
Air-Inclusive Vacations - Applicable Taxes & Fees
Air-inclusive vacations include government-imposed taxes and fees applicable at the time of booking and will be shown as a Total Amount. Additional airline fees for baggage may apply. At the time of booking your air-inclusive vacation online, carrier Websites will be provided to check baggage fees, or you can visit www.iflybags.com for up-to-date baggage pricing/restrictions. For return travel from some countries, international travelers are required to pay entry and/or exit fees at the airport. These fees will be collected by the local government and are payable by the traveler at time of travel. Your confirmation booking information will contain information about these fees.
