| Rating: Traveled on: 11/27/2011 Reviewed on: 12/07/2011 Review: We had a great time on this cruise, and we spent very little time off the ship, so for us, it was more like a cruise to nowhere. We got to explore the ship, and there are lots of things to do on your own, which is good, b/c we found the entertainment to be sorely lacking in terms of quality.
The only port we were interested in, Grand Cayman, we could not get into due to rocky seas and high wind. Bummer, but we'll catch it on the next cruise, so this did not affect our enjoyment of the cruise at all. Montego Bay was nothing special, we went to Doctor's Cave Beach for a little while and then opted to go back on the ship instead. Cozumel is OK, nothing special there either, so we were back on the ship within two hours.
The service was excellent, the food was hit or miss. We tried the Cucina del Capitano for lunch, and the pasta bar was really more like Olive Garden's "Create your own pasta" dish, so not really anything special. Hubby tried their lasagna though, and he found it to be excellent. We ate our meals in both of the dining rooms, as well as the Lido buffet, and again, it was hit or miss, across all restaurants.
The Serenity Deck is a nice touch, but placement next to the water slides was a bit silly. Also, the hot tubs there were never really hot, and the same issue was experienced in the back of the ship, by the pool there. We did discover 4 hot tubs on the Lanai deck, and they were pretty much empty and super-hot. We spent a lot of time there for both those reasons.
We met a lot of nice people, we heard a lot of the same concerns. Did these "negatives" affect our trip? No, we chose not to let it bother us, we tend to be pretty laid back and know that vacation is what you make of it. However, given that we've seen the better quality of food and entertainment on competing carriers, we know that we'll never sail Carnival again. I hope Royal Caribbean meets our expectations in the near future! |
